Dow Gains 47 Points, Closes Week Up
The Dow closed the day up 46.97 and broke 18k, ending at 18,019.35. NASDAQ also grew, adding 36.23 points to close at 4,893.84. The S&P 500 was up 8.51 to finish trading at 2,096.99. World markets were mixed, with London, Germany, and Hong Kong posting gains. Japan's Nikkei was down slightly, falling -66.12 to 17,913.36.
Microsoft Bouncing Back After Weak Q4. Microsoft's (MSFT) 5-day trend has been positive after a tough month.
Avon Up Despite Missing Earnings Estimates. Shares of Avon (AVP) rose today, up 0.39 points, despite shortfalls in the company's Q4 earnings. Avon finished the day trading at 9.08 per share.
Marketing Makes Money. Both Internet and brick and mortar marketing firms made money today. Groupon (GRPN) grew 0.51 points, or 6.84%, on news of quarterly revenues beating their targets by 20%. Groupon closed trading today at 7.97 per share. Nielson Holdings (NLSN) was up over 2 points, to 45.59 per share, and micro-targeter Reach Local Inc (RLOC) grew 13.29%, or 0.42 points, to end trading at 3.58.
Insurer Assurant Misses On Q4 Earnings. Assurant Inc (AIZ) fell -4.98 points today, after missing earnings targets and worries over the company's debt. The insurer closed the day's trading at 61.44, down -7.40% over 5 days. DaVita Healthcare Partners (DVA) was also down today, sliding -3.29 points to close at 73.10.
More Good News In The Health Services Sector. Health Services has been a strong gainer so far this quarter, with profits growing on increased enrollment. Mid-cap stocks are rising in the sector, and companies like Tenet Healthcare Systems (THC), SunLink Healthcare (SSY), and Genesis (GEN) show off some of the diversity in the sector. Tenet Healthcare Systems is nearing a 3-month low, but is trending for a recovery and gained 0.75 points to close at 44.30. SunLink (SSY) is up 1.46% YTD, but because of a soft Q4 is currently fighting back against a negative 3 month trend. Genesis (GEN), an established regional provider, grew 0.20 points today and has outperformed the sector by over 10%. Genesis sits near a 3-month high at 8.63 per share.
Currency and Commodities. Oil prices closed the week trading at $52.78 per barrel on a week that has seen prices rise. The US Dollar gained 1.01% versus the Canadian Dollar, 1.13% compared to the Japanese Yen, 0.95% against the British Pound, and grew 0.61% relative to the Euro. This continues the trend of a strengthening US Dollar worldwide. Gold gained $6.40 today, and ended trading at $1,227.10 per troy ounce.
