Markets Soar on Monday After a Very Slow Week
Altera Levels Off After Huge Friday Gains. After news broke on Friday that chipmaker Intel (INTC) was set to acquire Altera (ALTR) in a big buyout, both businesses saw stock prices surge.
UnitedHealth Up On Acquisition News. UnitedHealth (UNH) made huge gains in trading today, after announcing that it would acquire Catamaran (CTRX) in a lateral deal that expands UnitedHealth's offerings to the public. UnitedHealth was 2.99 points today, and closed at $121.00 per share. Catamaran, a pharmacy-benefits management company, gained 11.51 points in trading today, and ended the day's trading at $59.83 per share.
Energy Stocks Make Gains Despite Struggling Oil Prices. Even though oil fell slightly in trading today, down -$0.19 to $48.68 per barrel, many energy companies were on the rise. Exxon Mobil (XOM) gained 2.05 points to close at $85.63 per share. Chevron Corp (CVX) was up 2.62 points to close the day at $106.90 per share. Kinder Morgan (KMI) reversed a losing streak and gained a scant 0.80 points on the day, closing at $42.07. Schlumberger (SLB) was up 1.17 points to close at $84.48. Even Transocean (RIG), which has struggled quite a bit lately, gained 0.22 points to end the day's trading at $14.71 per share.
Netflix Stock Continues To Soar. Online movie and television streaming service Netflix (NFLX) has had a strong few days of growth, and today was no different. The company gained 7.80 points today, and closed at $422.57 per share. These gains come on the back of an extremely strong performance on last Tuesday, in which Netflix stock shot up 13.28 points on news of a larger than expected user base and expanded offerings.
Analog Devices Trading Higher After Barclays Upgrade. Electronics manufacturer Analog Devices (ADI) got some good news from Barclays today, after the company released word that Analog Devices had successfully shed some baggage that, in the opinion of Barclays, was holding back growth. Analog Devices added 5.97 points on the news, and ended today's trading at $64.81 per share.
