Dow Falls 140 on Sluggish Volume Friday

Markets slipped downward in trading today, giving back most of yesterday's gains.The Dow closed down 140.53 points and finished the day's trading at 17,898.84. The NASDAQ was down as well, losing 31.41 points to close the day at 5,051.10. The S&P 500 fell 14.75 points and closed at 2,094.11.

Blue Chips Tumble After Solid Thursday

Three of the blue chip stocks that we traditionally watch to get a feel for the market, 3M (MMM), Goldman Sachs (GS), and UnitedHealth (UNH), were all down in trading today.
The blue chips mirrored the market as a whole, with losses more likely in the trouble sectors and better performance from others. With a little practice, it's easy to take a quick glance at the Dow's blue chips and get a feel for where the market is heading for the day.

NVidia (NVDA) Down on Acquisition News

Shares of NVidia (NVDA) stock were down today, as the market weighed in on a recent big technology purchase from TransGaming, a Linux-based graphics library. NVidia will also release a high-end Windows 10 PC, and has several projects in the pipeline in order to get its earnings and growth back on track. In trading today, NVidia dipped nearly 3%, losing 0.59 points to close at $21.11 per share.

Tough Day for Tech as Apple (AAPL), Google (GOOG), Microsoft (MSFT) All Down

All of the big names in the tech sector were victims of today's market backslide. What volume there was were mostly sales, as investors bailed out on their latest positions amid market losses. Apple (AAPL) was down 1.10% in trading today, dropping 1.42 points to close the day at $127.17. Google (GOOG) lost 2.28 points to close at $532.33. Microsoft (MSFT) dropped just over a percentage point to close the day's trading at $45.97 per share.

Energy Companies Still Lead In Losses

Rain or shine, bull or bear, one thing you can count on in the market right now is that energy companies will probably lead the day in losses. Today was no different, with CONSOL Energy (CNX) and Southwestern Energy (SWN) leading the Dow in losses on lower than average volume. CONSOL fell further, losing over 4% of its value in trading today. Southwestern was down as well, shedding 3.48%.
