Gas Prices Set To Be Lower Than Average This Winter

Macy’s (M) Down Big After Poor Holiday Forecast

Macy’s (M) saw share prices plummet after informing investors that the holidays might not be kind to the retail giant. Macy’s fell 6.58 points, or 14%, on the news. The Macy’s problem really illustrates how this will be a very split holiday for retailers.

Sales of toys and personal electronics are forecast to grow this holiday season. An industry group said that toy purchases could be the highest that they’ve been in a decade, growing by nearly a third.
That might not be a big enough boost to make up for the drop in consumer spending that has been observed across the board for Macy’s.

Gas Prices Set To Be Lower Than Average This Winter

The price of natural gas has fallen nearly 10% over the past 30 days. Although prices are set to spike this winter, the slowdown in gas futures might be a good sign for consumers. Lower prices in supply before gas companies hike rates could mean a softer landing for people heating their house with natural gas this winter.

Home heating oil prices have also been down, along with gasoline prices and the cost of coal. Energy futures in general are suffering from the pressure that OPEC is putting on the market. And although the Energy Minerals sector is the most profitable over the past 90 days, the sector is also shedding jobs and tightening belts. There’s no indication about how long they’ll be able to keep profitable under these conditions.

Coal producers have remained profitable despite the falling cost of coal. They’re keeping their heads above water through a combination of layoffs and increased production, depending on the mine. Although coal burning plants are suffering from tightened emissions standards, they are also producing more energy than ever before.
