Rough Economic Data Halts Market Movement
By: InvestorGuide Staff, dated July 28th, 2010The markets suffered losses across the board today after the Fed released a bleak Beige Book report. The Dow Jones dropped 39.81 points to 10,497.88 while the Nasdaq retreated 23.69 points to finished at 2,264.56 for the day. The S&P 500 did not fare much better with its 7.71 point loss. Unfortunately, today was also the Dow Jones’ first losing session in four closes. Investors seemed unable to shake the day’s disappointing economic data, which really appeared to drag the session down. In corporate news, Symantec and Boeing had bad days as both posted lower-than-expected quarterly performances. However, General Dynamics and ConocoPhillips came out ahead when they surprised investors with strong quarterly reports. The price of gold went up $2.40 per ounce to close at $1,160.40 for July delivery while cost of crude oil for September delivery fell $0.51 per barrel to $76.99.
