housing starts
A monthly report that tracks the start of construction on new residential housing units by geographic region. The number of housing starts is strongly influenced by interest rates and can be highly Volatile because of weather and natural disasters, but is a reflection of economic strength. The report on housing starts for the previous month is released between the 16th and 20th of each month by the Census Bureau and is available on the Web at www.census.gov.
