incentive stock option (ISO)
An employer-sponsored stock option plan in which the tax burden from the option grant falls on the employee rather than the company. Unlike a non-qualified stock option in which the employer is taxed when the option is granted or exercised, with an ISO the employee is taxed on the capital gain (or loss) at the time the security is sold.
