lender of last resort
A bank that loans money to an organization unable to obtain financing from any other source. Typically such a loan takes place when the borrower's credit or financial standing does not meet minimum underwriting criteria. In the United States, the Federal Reserve is the lender of last resort and steps in when failure to obtain funding will adversely affect the national economy.
