short the basis
A position established by going long a market in order to protect an existing position in an asset from a rise in the market price for that asset. A European firm with a short Exposure to EUR/USD as a result of a forthcoming sale of a U.S. subsidiary could go short the basis by selling sufficient EUR/USD futures contracts to protect against a rise in the EUR/USD exchange rate. also called a long hedge.
