Handling Rejection by an Employer

Rejection can be one of the most painful areas of a job search for someone. When you are trying to sell yourself, a product, or a service to a desired audience rejection is a necessary evil. The "perceived" pain we feel is not altogether real, and more importantly not necessary.

I have never seen a "no" injure, paralyze or kill anyone! The handling of rejection is simply a matter of training one's self on how they react to it. Human nature says it is personal when someone rejects us. We tend to get angry, hurt and discouraged from repeating whatever task brought about the feeling.

If we change our perception, it is possible to not let rejection throw us off our game. If someone gave you a list and said "one of the companies on this list will hire you today", what time would you start calling? If you knew it was sure fire way that you were to get a job would you stop calling until you reached them?

I am almost certain the answer is emphatically NO! The truth is how you handle rejection is crucial in determining how quickly you gain employment. The saying "fortune favors the bold" is very relevant.

Here is a way to look at this that might help you: WITH EVERY NO YOU ARE ONE STEP CLOSER TO YOUR YES! When a prospective employer says no to you it brings you one step closer to employment. The reasoning is if you are being told no it means you are asking for a job! The more times you ask the more likely you will receive.

One exercise that might aid the potential job seeker is to make a list of how many "no's" you received that day, week and month. You should have fun with it. Try setting a goal for how many "no's" you want to receive that day. If you anticipate receiving them, they go down a little smoother.

To take that concept a step further would be to expect the "no". If you expect the "no" than it isn't a let down when it happens. Although this might seem against human nature, IT WORKS! This concept might help you to pick up the phone and make that additional call when the phone seems to weigh 500lbs.

When we realistically look at it, all you need is that one "yes" and the "no's" stop. The moral of this article to "keep on keeping on", don't give up and you will see results. It breaks down to a numbers game, the more people you contact the more success you will have. Good luck and happy hunting!
