State Street to Cross into Banking's Number 2 Position
State Street doesn't plan to sit idly by as its rivals move forward with plans to dominate the banking industry. While Mellon Financial Corp. (MEL: Charts, News, Offers) and Bank of New York (BK: Charts, News, Offers) announced in December that they would be joining forces, (Bank of New York Starts a New Era with Mellon Financial) creating the leading asset management company in the US, State Street didn't wait long to make a move of its own. State Street's announcement today, reporting that it would be acquiring Investors Financial Services Corp. (IFIN: Charts, News, Offers), has the company poised to capture the number two position as far as assets under custody.
