Stock of the Day

The Waste Management Industry's Waste Management (WMI) was InvestorGuide.com's Stock of the Day on 8/11/2008.
Waste Management Increases Bid for Republic Services
The largest U.S. trash hauler, Waste Management Inc, increased its unsolicited takeover bid for rival Republic Services (RSG: Charts, News, Offers) by nearly 9 percent to $6.73 billion. This buyout is an attempt to block the rival's plan to buy Allied Waste Industries Inc (AW: Charts, News, Offers). Waste Management's revised cash offer of $37 per share represents a nearly 33 percent premium to the closing price on July 11, when the first $34 per share acquisition offer was first disclosed. Last month, Republic rejected the original bid of $6.2 billion, and its largest shareholder, Bill Gates' investment arm, asked Waste Management to walk away. This second offer is an obvious refusal to Gates' request. With anti-trust issues and high profile stock holders opposing the merger, will Waste Management's plan get stuck in the mud? Read more
