Sites translate financial lingo
By JEANNE RIDGWAY, Courier-Post Staff
If you don't know a hedge fund from a hedgehog, there are Web sites to help you navigate the maze of financial lingo. One of them, InvestorWords.com, is an online financial glossary. The site is part of WebFinance Inc., a family of Web sites providing users with tools to bolster their financial education. "We help everyone from the beginner to the advanced trader. We also have financial professionals using our Web sites," said Tom Murcko, 34, founder of Virginia-based WebFinance Inc.
At InvestorWords.com, users may look up a word, or increase their knowledge slowly and painlessly by subscribing for free to the InvestorWords "Term of the Day" service. A financial word or phrase is defined and sent automatically to a subscriber's e-mail address. On Monday, users learned about "mass customization." Also, users can look up words associated with specific topics such as banking, insurance, or stocks, or make a request for words to be added to the InvestorWords glossary. "We started with 1,000 terms in 1999, and now we have 6,000, and most of the increase has been in response to users telling us what they want to know," Murcko said.
Sister sites connected to InvestorWords.com include InvestorGuide, which contains daily news stories about business, a stock research tool, three financial newsletters that are e-mailed to subscribers and something called InvestorGuide University. "InvestorGuide University explains financial concepts in plain English, and gives (users) an idea of what they should do to become better investors, " Murcko said.
All services are free.
