Can the Dolans Deliver Value to Cablevision Shareholders?
Excerpt from the InvestorGuide.com Stock of the Day on 8/6/2008

It looks like the Dolans are going to try to shake things up with Cablevision again. The Dolans, i.e. the founding family behind the New York based cable empire, own about 24% of the company but control about 71% of the voting stock, have tried twice in the last 3 years to take the company private but have been unable to do so. Now they are taking about exploring strategic options for some of the businesses that make up Cablevision. CEO James Dolan also hinted that the company is going to become more shareholder friendly (i.e. do stuff like stock buybacks, issue a special dividend). Keeping in mind that the Dolans don't exactly have a sterling reputation on the street, how confident should the rest of the shareholders in Cablevision be that management is going to able to maximize shareholder value or will investment bankers be the only people making some coin off this?

Cablevision is more than just a pure cable play. Besides being the 5th largest cable company in the country with more than 3 million customers primarily in the New York area (in fact, until recently, Cablevision was essentially the exclusive cable provider in Long Island), the company also owns a number of content businesses. These include a news channel and movies channels such as the Independent Film Channel (IFC) and the American Movie Channel (AMC). The latter has been doing especially well recently due to the success of a couple of hit shows. Plus, Cablevision also owns the famed Madison Square Garden arena along with two New York sports teams, the Knicks and the Rangers. It recently bought the Sundance channel and the Long Island daily newspaper, Newsday. The latter move is especially questionable given the price it paid ($650 million), the fast declining fortunes of the newspaper business (just ask Tribune's Sam Zell) and the fact that Newsday doesn't any obvious synergies with the rest of Cablevision's businesses (unlike say a News Corp. (NWS: Charts, News, Offers) where the Newsday purchase would have fit right in with the company's New York Post). More >

Speculation on Cablevision's future mounts with withdrawal of bid
Excerpt from the InvestorGuide.com Stock of the Day on 10/26/2005

The Dolan Family Group withdrew their offer to take Cablevision private yesterday, writing another chapter in the almost soap opera type saga of a company which over the last 10 months has seen a feud break out between its chairman and chief executive, battled with the New York mayor over the construction of a new stadium and failed in its last second bid to prevent rivals, Time Warner (TWX: Charts, News, Offers) and Comcast (CMCSA: Charts, News, Offers) from acquiring Adelphia. So why did the mercurial Dolans withdraw their bid and will the company be on the chopping block again anytime soon? More >

Dolans Considering Privatizing Cablevision.
Excerpt from the InvestorGuide.com Stock of the Day on 6/20/2005

The Dolan family is considering taking the sixth-largest U.S. cable provider private, a deal which is raising some eyebrows on Wall Street as generally cable companies are better suited to be public. The stock price has risen over 6 percent in early trading following the report. More >
