H&R Block Taps into $2bn Credit Line
Excerpt from the InvestorGuide.com Stock of the Day on 8/22/2007
The latest victim of the recent credit squeeze is not a mortgage lender of a large investment bank - it's H&R Block. The Kansas City-based company best known for its tax preparation services drew $1bn in credit to help keep its subsidiary, Block Financial Corp., from going under. Also at stake is the sale of the company's Option One Mortgage unit to Cerberus Capital Management, a deal valued at $1bn but threatened by the tightening credit market. With the perfect storm seemingly at hand, can H&R Block keep the boat afloat or are rough water waters still on the horizon? More >
H&R Block Suffers Loss On Mortgage Woes
Excerpt from the InvestorGuide.com Stock of the Day on 6/21/2007
H&R Block is learning the hard way that it maybe it shouldn't quit its day job. Known primarily for its tax and accounting services during the busy tax season of February through April, H&R Block Inc. reported a heavy loss this quarter as the other areas of the business continue to struggle. The company also has branches dealing with mortgage and lending services, and their struggles have now overcome the lucrative accounting business. Is H&R Block taking these results as a sign that it's time to make some changes or will the company have to hope for better luck next time? More >
H&R Block Sticking to its Guns
Excerpt from the InvestorGuide.com Stock of the Day on 3/17/2006
It's tax season! Nothing brings out more joy than plowing through stacks of receipts to try to find deductions, or trying to fill out IRS forms while crossing your fingers (it is quite difficult). Since taxes are one of life's certainties—at least according to Ben Franklin—there are plenty of companies out there willing to take the beloved task out of your hands, at least for a price. The troubling part comes when tax preparation companies run into their own sets of problems. H&R Block has been in the news for all the wrong reasons in recent weeks, with reports of fraudulent IRAs and a snafu in calculating its own income tax rate. When it rains, it pours. What is the Kansas City-based company up to, and when does it plan to give us some better news? More >
