Has General Mills Found the Recipe for Success?

You might consider recent sales of brand name food products, such as those items manufactured and sold by General Mills, as somewhat of a conundrum. On the one hand, maybe sales of brand name products are decreasing, as customers attempt to save money by purchasing store brand items. On the other hand, perhaps more people are sacrificing their frequent meals out at restaurants, and instead have returned to more frequent grocery shopping trips, and are picking up brands they are familiar with. Coca-Cola Bid Rejected by Chinese Government

The news was first announced in September 2008 - Coca-Cola was making a bid to purchase a major Chinese juice maker, Huiyuan Juice Group Ltd. The company's bid was about $2.4 billion, a significant premium over Huiyuan's stock price. On the surface, the deal seemed good for both companies; however, yesterday it was announced that Coca-Cola's bid was rejected. Sara Lee Posts a Tasty Profit

This Wednesday morning before the markets opened, Sara Lee had finished reporting their 1Q earnings. They reported a 15% increase in earnings compared to last year's earnings. Even so, Sara Lee's stock followed in the market's footsteps and opened lower by about 6% at the time of this writing. While it is hard to argue with the numbers, what is the logic behind the lower open? Also, what does Sara Lee have in mind for their upcoming fiscal year, and how were they able to increase their earnings when so many companies were struggling to battle the recession-like economy this last quarter?
