J.M. Smucker Beats Expectations with Help from Folgers
Excerpt from the InvestorGuide.com Stock of the Day on 8/21/2009

Although at times it has seemed like the entire economy has been suffering in recent months, there have been some sectors which have prevailed while others faltered. Discount retailers such as Wal-Mart (WMT: Charts, News, Offers) have received a boost from consumers who were looking for bargains on their everyday purchases, and food manufacturers have been able to benefit from a change in behavior as well, as many consumers have opted for less eating out, and more cooking at home. J.M. Smucker was one of the main companies in the spotlight today, to see if its earnings report could continue a positive trend seen in the processed food industry.

Analysts had been predicting that Smucker would be announcing positive earnings for the first quarter, and Smucker passed the test with flying colors. Since last year, Smucker's profit more than doubled, jumping from $42.3 million to $98.1 million. Revenue rose sharply as well, growing from $663.7 million to $1.05 billion. After removing some one-time costs for restructuring and other activities, the company's earnings worked out to 92 cents per share, significantly above analysts' estimates of 80 cents per share. Excerpt from the InvestorGuide.com Stock of the Day on 7/1/2009

You might consider recent sales of brand name food products, such as those items manufactured and sold by General Mills, as somewhat of a conundrum. On the one hand, maybe sales of brand name products are decreasing, as customers attempt to save money by purchasing store brand items. On the other hand, perhaps more people are sacrificing their frequent meals out at restaurants, and instead have returned to more frequent grocery shopping trips, and are picking up brands they are familiar with. Well, based on the earnings report announced by General Mills this morning, the answer seemed pretty clear, at least for General Mills. So, in which direction are sales trending, and why? More >

The news was first announced in September 2008 - Coca-Cola was making a bid to purchase a major Chinese juice maker, Huiyuan Juice Group Ltd. The company's bid was about $2.4 billion, a significant premium over Huiyuan's stock price. On the surface, the deal seemed good for both companies; however, yesterday it was announced that Coca-Cola's bid was rejected. What were the reasons for rejection, and why are investors speculating that this might affect other acquisitions as well? More >

Sara Lee Posts a Tasty Profit
Excerpt from the InvestorGuide.com Stock of the Day on 11/5/2008

This Wednesday morning before the markets opened, Sara Lee had finished reporting their 1Q earnings. They reported a 15% increase in earnings compared to last year's earnings. Even so, Sara Lee's stock followed in the market's footsteps and opened lower by about 6% at the time of this writing. While it is hard to argue with the numbers, what is the logic behind the lower open? Also, what does Sara Lee have in mind for their upcoming fiscal year, and how were they able to increase their earnings when so many companies were struggling to battle the recession-like economy this last quarter?
