Johnson & Johnson to Buy Mentor for $1.07 Billion

Johnson & Johnson (JNJ: Charts, News, Offers) announced today that it has reached a definitive agreement to buy Mentor Corporation for $1.07 billion. Mentor is a medical supplier for the aesthetic surgery market, most notably breast implants. The deal values Mentor at approximately $31.00 per share, which is almost double its market value at the close of last week. J&J intends to have Mentor operate as a stand-alone business unit that will report through Johnson & Johnson's Ethicon Inc. Why is Johnson & Johnson willing to pay such a high premium for Mentor?
