Johnson & Johnson Invests $1.5 Billion in Promising Alzheimer Treatment
Excerpt from the InvestorGuide.com Stock of the Day on 7/2/2009

Pharmaceuticals has always been one of those fields which seems to do really well overall, despite any overarching economic issues. Success does not come without hard work and competition, however, as the field is made up of strong corporations including Johnson & Johnson, Wyeth (WYE: Charts, News, Offers), and Pfizer (PFE: Charts, News, Offers). Each company would surely like to be the dominant player in the market, and these companies aren't afraid to make some big moves in attempts to gain control. Johnson & Johnson announced one such move this morning, and it will be interesting to see what it does to the health of the involved companies.

Johnson & Johnson announced this morning that they are about to become involved in an Alzheimer treatment project. Elan Corporation (ELN: Charts, News, Offers), a pharmaceutical company based in Ireland, has been working on the development of Bapineuzumab, a treatment for Alzheimer patients, which works by removing protein that builds up in the brain of the patients. So far, the treatment has shown to be successful, and the medicine is currently going through what should be its third and final round of testing. Furthermore, this treatment is unique compared to other current Alzheimer drugs; it appears to be the first treatment that may actually slow the progress of the disease, instead of just treating the symptoms. Johnson & Johnson Sales Fall, but Company is not Ailing
Excerpt from the InvestorGuide.com Stock of the Day on 4/14/2009

Johnson & Johnson, reporting the company's first quarter earnings this morning, was another interesting example of how a company can do worse than it had in previous quarters, and yet still satisfy its investors and surprise the analysts. The company's numbers were less than in previous quarters, but the immediate response was one of delight, sending the stock price up in early trading. And despite a number of problem areas, the company is still maintaining its yearly profit forecast. What exactly is causing the company to remain so optimistic? More >

Excerpt from the InvestorGuide.com Stock of the Day on 12/1/2008

Johnson & Johnson (JNJ: Charts, News, Offers) announced today that it has reached a definitive agreement to buy Mentor Corporation for $1.07 billion. Mentor is a medical supplier for the aesthetic surgery market, most notably breast implants. The deal values Mentor at approximately $31.00 per share, which is almost double its market value at the close of last week. J&J intends to have Mentor operate as a stand-alone business unit that will report through Johnson & Johnson's Ethicon Inc. Why is Johnson & Johnson willing to pay such a high premium for Mentor? Johnson and Johnson wins a lawsuit dating back to 2000
Excerpt from the InvestorGuide.com Stock of the Day on 10/1/2008

Just yesterday among the rallying stocks, Johnson and Johnson won a $1.2 billion dollar lawsuit filed against Boston Scientific Corp (BSX: Charts, News, Offers) and Medtronic Inc (MDT: Charts, News, Offers). For a company that builds its image on being a family-oriented company, a $1.2 billion dollar lawsuit hardly seems fit for Johnson and Johnson. So exactly how did this lawsuit come about, how does this affect the company's bottom line, and really, should we expect to continue seeing Johnson and Johnson suing others? More >
