Coca-Cola Bid Rejected by Chinese Government
Excerpt from the InvestorGuide.com Stock of the Day on 3/18/2009

The news was first announced in September 2008 - Coca-Cola was making a bid to purchase a major Chinese juice maker, Huiyuan Juice Group Ltd. The company's bid was about $2.4 billion, a significant premium over Huiyuan's stock price. On the surface, the deal seemed good for both companies; however, yesterday it was announced that Coca-Cola's bid was rejected. What were the reasons for rejection, and why are investors speculating that this might affect other acquisitions as well?

Coca-Cola had numerous reasons for going after Huiyuan. Huiyuan had an 8% market share in the Chinese fruit/vegetable juice market, as well as a more than 40% market share in the pure fruit juice market. While Coca-Cola had about 12% of the fruit/vegetable juice market share, they did not hold any market share in the pure fruit juice market, so this would have allowed them to break into that area. The acquisition would have also allowed Coca-Cola to use Huiyuan's well-recognized name, as well as use their local production facilities. Finally, analysts have predicted that the Chinese juice market will continue to expand, an opportunity that Coca-Cola did not want to ignore. More >

Coca-Cola Bids $2.4 Billion for Huiyuan
Excerpt from the InvestorGuide.com Stock of the Day on 9/3/2008

The Coca-Cola Company (KO: Charts, News, Offers) announced today that it will place a bid for the Chinese juice maker Huiyuan. The Atlanta-based beverage firm will bid $2.4 billion in its attempt to acquire China Huiyuan Juice Group Ltd. Many analysts speculate that the price tag on this deal is much higher than Huiyuan's market value. Coca-Cola is shelling out $12 per share, which is just under triple the closing price of Huiyuan last Friday, and 43 times Huiyuan's forecasted 2008 earnings. Why is Coca-Cola paying such a premium for this Chinese juice maker? More >

Coca-Cola's Net Income is Down, while Revenue is Up
Excerpt from the InvestorGuide.com Stock of the Day on 7/17/2008

Coca-Cola (KO: Charts, News, Offers) experiences a 23% drop in net income, but a 9% increase in revenue for the second quarter. This seems like an odd statement, but Coca-Cola's unique positioning in the drink industry has the company producing some interesting results. Coke officially reported this quarter's revenue as $9.05 billion and its net income as $1.42 billion, which was $1.85 billion last quarter. So what exactly is Coca-Cola doing that keeps its revenue increasing, even though its net income is falling? More >

Coca-Cola Nabs Glaceau Water for $4.1bn
Excerpt from the InvestorGuide.com Stock of the Day on 5/25/2007

Coca-Cola agreed to purchase privately-held vitamin water producer Energy Brands, Inc. in a cash deal valued at $4.1bn. The purchase of the bottled water company is designed to help Coke expand its non-soda sales, especially in rapidly growing areas such as energy drinks and premium-priced water. The deal will be the largest acquisition that Coca-Cola has ever undertaken, and represents a considerable windfall since the Glaceau brand was valued at $2.2bn last year. Will this new deal help Coke make up for falling volume in North America, or will the company continue to rely on international sales to drive growth? More >
