Nissan Joins Global Effort to Go Green
Excerpt from the InvestorGuide.com Stock of the Day on 12/11/2006

Nissan has become the latest car manufacturer to cave under the pressure of new governmental policies and an increasingly environmentally-aware public. Plans were announced today that Nissan will be unveiling a next-generation fuel cell vehicle sometime on the early 2010s for distribution in Japan and North America. When it comes to eco-friendly vehicle offerings, Nissan has not embraced new technology as readily as competitors like Ford (F: Charts, News, Offers) and Toyota (TM: Charts, News, Offers). Does this announcement truly mark something new, or is Nissan just trying to catch up?

With energy costs again on the rise, the prospect of a more fuel-efficient car is certainly appealing to both American and international drivers. In today's report, Nissan's plans included launching not only a new hybrid vehicle, but also cars that will run on bio-ethanol and clean diesel fuel. Nissan's CEO has a reputation for not exactly being enthusiastic when it comes to hybrid technology, stating expensive costs for both car manufacturers and consumers as a major obstacle to wanting to engage in production. What's changed then? The Chief Operating Officer, Toshiyuki Shiga, said, "All these investments are a must to ensure sustained growth in the medium and longer term. This isn't a sudden shift in strategy. We were just a bit behind in communicating what technology we possessed." More >
