HP's Earnings Not Recession-Proof

Hewlett-Packard reported their Q1 profits yesterday after the markets closed. While the past two quarters have been upbeat and positive, it seems the recession has finally caught up. They Palo-Alto-based company reported a 13 percent decrease in profits and revised their 2009 guidance downwards. Total sales amounted to $28.8 billion, which missed analyst estimates by about $3 billion. As a result, its stock has been decreasing since after-hours trading Wednesday night. At the time of this writing, shares in HP were trading for 31.69, signaling a drop of 7 percent. Hewlett-Packard Set to Report Earnings Today

Palo-Alto based Hewlett-Packard is set to report their quarterly earnings today after the market closes this afternoon. In seeing that rival computer manufacturer Dell (DELL: Charts, News, Offers) had reported a decrease in profits, the question becomes whether or not HP could continue in its number one spot. More than that however, due to HP's actions of preemptively reporting positive earnings last week, will HP, a bellwether in the technology industry, be the one to keep the optimism in the markets for today and Tuesday or will investors respond negatively when HP releases their earnings?
